Maryland’s C&O Canal Experience
For over a century, The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal (C&O) National Historical Park has been a vital thread connecting communities along the picturesque Potomac River. Today, it stands as more than just a historic waterway – it is an 184.5-mile-long journey through time, seamlessly blending recreation, education, and history. In 2019 alone, it contributed significantly, with visitor spending amounting to an impressive $98.4 million.
In anticipation of the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the C&O Canal National Historical Park designation, a visionary partnership emerged. The three destination marketing organizations (DMOs) spanning the park's route – Montgomery, Frederick, Washington, and Allegany counties – joined forces to create the C&O Canal Experience. This collaborative effort aimed to present the park and its neighboring communities as an integrated haven for travelers.
The result of this alliance was nothing short of remarkable. Extensive media coverage, both virtual and in-person media finalization (FAM) tours, cooperative advertising endeavors, and strategic economic development grant funding were the outcomes of their united front.
Together, these initiatives not only celebrated the rich history of the C&O Canal but also propelled it into a new era of recognition and appreciation.
